We Do 'Em Our Way (1980)

An anonymous reader kindly pointed out that the link to this was dead- due to an oversight on my part back in March when I was just getting into the swing of this blogging caper.

So here's the whole thing with a fresh link:

Fond memories of this little £2.50 gem, which we played endlessly in my mate Rob's bedroom in 1980. As far as I am aware this was the Music For Pleasure label's only real foray into the world of the 'new wave'*. What we have is a selection of punk and punkish groups, some very well known, some not so well known, playing covers of fifties and sixties hits.

Sex Pistols- Rock Around The Clock
Devo- Satisfaction
The Golant Pistons- Friday On My Mind
Sex Pistols- Stepping Stone
Those Helicopters- World Without Love
The Hollywood Brats- Then He Kissed Me
The Flying Lizards- Money
The Slits- I Heard It Through The Grapevine
The Stranglers- Walk On By
The Hammersmith Gorillas- You Really Got Me
UK Subs- She’s Not There
The Dickies- Nights In White Satin

* I was wrong, of course, they featured Blondie and the Stiff label acts.

  5. Nice one. Just came across your blog and there looks to be some cool stuff posted. I wore out my vinyl copy of this long ago and it's great to hear it again - especially the Golant Pistons track - always a favourite of mine.

  7. Ah, this is my favorite record! Mine got a bit warped during a move a couple years ago (but I still listen to it all the time) :( Thank you so much for this! I can't wait for my download to finish so I can listen :D

  8. A great album I still own on vinyl, but isn't very well known in Canada. I found it in a bargain bin in the 80's. Really love "Friday On My mind", and "You Really Got Me"-both kick ass covers, better than the originals for high energy and balls! These tracks increased my interest in Pre-punk, as well as these two bands. "World Without Love" is pretty tough on the ears, but worth a laugh, and the only real stinker on the LP, in my view. Incidentally, Iv'e noticed that the artwork concept has been "borrowed" over the years by a number of comps, one which I own featuring One Way System, Upstarts, Lurkers etc...also quite a good mix in it's own right.

  9. Oh yeah, forgot to mention this, and I'm sure most people will know this, but that's gotta be Ten Pole Tudour, not the Pistols doing Rock Around the Clock. Interestingly, it was listed incorrectly On The Swindle LP, as well, but has been corrected since...

  10. Malcolm Maclaren was so down on John Lydon that he was determined to carry on the Pistols without him- so in the era of Swindle there were numbers with Ronnie Biggs and Edward Tudor-Pole on vocals (The Great Rock n Roll Swindle, Who Killed Bambi and Rock Around The Clock) but the band were still billed as the Sex Pistols.
Thanks for taking the time to comment folks- enjoy the music!

  11. Yeah...Lydon mentions Eddie Tudour being his potential replacement in his autobiography No Blacks, No Irish, No Dogs...and doesn't seem impressed by the notion. However, I'm sure Iv'e seen copies of The Swindle with those tracks re-listed as Ten Pole Tudour (perhaps only on CD or cassette?). I tend to agree with you, and am pretty sure the situation was as you detail, the pistols with Eddie fronting, but it does create some confusion. Anyway, Rock Around The Clock is pretty annoying, past the first few listens, or age 16 (when first discovering punk), but I still like Who Killed Bambi...and the story behind it. That's Eddie singing it in the movie, of course. The song Rock'n'Roll Swindle is obviously Ronnie Biggs fronting, but you forgot to mention he also does vocals on No One Is innocent, and Belsen. Ultimately, I just made mention of Ten Pole Tudour to let some people who may not have been aware, know. I think the album Swords Of A Thousand Men had some great stuff, and the CD version (best of), is very cool. So in other words, check it out for great pop-punk (or whatever you wish to call it)...Maybe Lydon think it's rotten, but decide for yourself. Also on this subject-does anyone know anything about other versions of The Swindle with alternate tracks, released at the time?-and no, not the single disk copy.

  12. I apologise for confusing an already convoluted issue. You are absolutely right-it's Eddie fronting the pistols. Maybe it was just easier to tag the tracks as Ten Pole Tudour, in reference to him on vocals. The band of the same name was an entirely seperate entity, with him as front man. I guess all this info's available elsewhere, anyway...to any who wish to research it. I'd still like to know about alternate versions of Swindle, though. I have a friend who has a vinyl copy with tracks I'm not familiar with, (4 or 5?) different from the typical copy. It isn't just I wanna Be Me replaced by Whatcha gonna Do About it. I've found mention of that vers. elsewhere. Maybe you can help clear this up for me?

  13. Thanks Anonymous(es)- I'm no Pistols expert- but Discogs lists 14 versions of the double album- here's the link:http://www.discogs.com/artist/Sex+Pistols

  14. Cool...thanks a million!I repectfully bow to your knowledge. You helped me solve this question. One of the best things about the pistols is that there is still a lot of "mystique'(for lack of a better word) and psudeo-legends surrounding them, after all these years. It's difficult to know where the real truth lies, sometimes.I wish I'd been old enough to catch them in their reign of infamy...but alas.Take care, and thanks again!

  15. Oh yeah, and other sources list Jones as lead on the song "swindle", not Biggs.Seems obvious now, shoulda checked my facts before I commented. Apologies! Me and my big mouth. I stand duly corrected.

  16. Yeah- i seem to remember Jones' vocals on there somewhere, and Tudor's. In the movie the song shows an audition for Rotten's replacement doesn't it? With all sorts of guys taking the mic in turn.
Did you check out the Spunk demo- a more authentic document of the real Pistols' sound?
    A good listen.
Enjoy and thanks for your contribution- a bit of feedback and chat makes it all worthwhile

  17. I can remember buying this back in the 80's. Still have the LP in the attic. Never thought in a million years that I would find it to download.
Thanks, you've made an old punk very happy.

  19. Thanks so much for this! One of the first LPs I ever bought (in Woolworths, naturally...). Played it to death back then and it will be great to hear the less well-known tracks again.

  20. Thanks for the post, and thanks to all the commenters for the extra info.

I love knowing the "etymology" of a song (who wrote it, who first performed it, who transformed it, etc). I also love knowing about different line-ups of bands, and which guitar-slinger guested on which track (officially or unofficially).

    Cheers!

  23. I've been looking for a good version of this for ages. My old cassette tape version was almost worn out and squeaked badly when playing, so I bought another copy off e-bay which was worse than my original! Thanks so much, they just don't do 'em like this anymore.

  24. Thanks Anonymous- that's exactly the sort of thing that I was hoping that this blog would achieve- enjoy the music (again!)
