Llwybr Llaethog- Hip Dub Reggae Hop (2000)

Blaenau Ffestiniog is a small town in North West Wales with a population of about 5000. It was formerly the centre of the slate mining industry. Thanks to John Griffiths it is also holds a very prominent place in the Atlas of Welsh Popular Music (I'm working on it!).
Returning from a visit to New York in 1984 Griffiths founded Llwybr Llaethog (the name translates as Milky Way) with his friend Kevs Ford . The BBC Wales music site describes Llwybr Llaethog as a revolutionary dance outfit pioneering a bass-heavy agit-rap style with a sharp satirical edge that single-handedly invented the genre of Welsh-language hip-hop ....

The Oi! movement arose when, according to The Business guitarist Steve Kent, the punk scene became infested with trendy university people using long words, trying to be artistic...and losing touch.
Anything that has to defend itself against charges of fascism is usually on dodgy ground to start with. Perhaps honest to goodness 'British working class culture' is by its very nature violent and racist? The thing about Oi! was that it was dumbed down enough to appeal to the sort of kids who kicked peoples heads in for a laugh, and groups like the NF saw the scene (along with the football terraces) as a well stocked recruiting ground.

A more generous analysis might be that Oi! was a fine example of the mobilized proletariat having the trendy left ( ie: Steve's trendy university people) throw up their hands in despair. I've got vivid memories of being chased by a baying crowd of skins in 14 holers and I must say that it was exhilarating. Getting pissed and fighting: cheap, accessible adventure sports for young have nots. And a raucous soundtrack makes it even more enjoyable.
One final observation- Gary Bushell was a cunt.

X- Los Angeles (1980)

The début LP of the influential punk band from, er... Los Angeles.
The album was produced by Ray Manzarek of The Doors who is also credited with recognizing the band's potential. Later records didn't achieve the critical acclaim of Los Angeles, as X underwent a genre drift towards a more commercial sound .

Plastic Bertrand- Ca Plane Pour Moi; Elton Motello- Jet Boy Jet Girl 7" (1977)

Hands up if you can name Lou Deprijck's biggest hit.
In 1977 Lou Deprijck recorded his composition Ca Plane Pour Moi with the following line up:
Mike Butcher (aka Jet Staxx), guitar; John Valke, bass; Bob Dartch, drums. The anthem of hedonistic abandon was intended as the B side to Pogo-Pogo.
It was released by Plastic Bertrand in December 1977. But Plastic Bertrand was not a pseudonym or alter ego of Deprijck. He was a lip synching front chosen by the record company for his his punk image and received less than 0.5% of the royalties.
Also in late 1977 Alan Ward, singer with punk band Bastard released Jet Boy Jet Girl. He used the same backing track recorded by Butcher,Valke and Dartch. The record was released under the name Elton Motello, and when it was reissued in Britain in 1978 it was mistakenly believed to be the original on which Ca Plane Pour Moi was modelled.

Germs- GI (1979)

Germs Incognito, the sole LP offering of the Los Angeles band. Singer Darby Crash committed suicide by heroin overdose on December 7, 1980.
